President Donald Trump has been briefed on a shooting at the Maryland headquarters of the National Security Agency, the White House said Wednesday.
A suspect is in custody and a black SUV was stopped at a barrier after the shooting was reported outside the NSA campus in Fort Meade, the Associated Press reported. AP also said one person was injured in the shooting and was taken to the hospital, citing a spokeswoman at Fort Meade.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Baltimore said on Twitter it sent personnel to respond. The situation has been contained and there are no further updates, it said in a subsequent posting.
The NSA and local law enforcement are investigating the incident at a secure entry gate and there is no ongoing safety threat, the agency said in an emailed statement.
The police activity closed roads near Fort Meade, the Maryland State Highway Administration said in a Twitter post.
Local television stations reported from helicopters that police surrounded a handcuffed man on the ground. It appeared that the SUV had crashed into a security barrier and bullet holes could be seen in the vehicle’s front windshield.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that has been affected. We will continue to provide updates as they become available,” the White House said in a statement.
A shooting in 2015 left one man dead and another wounded at the NSA campus after a security guard opened fire when their vehicle exited off the Baltimore Washington Parkway using a restricted exit ramp. The vehicle was reportedly stolen.
